Chris Burniske, Partner at venture capital firm Placeholder, made a bold prediction about the future of Ethereum in a tweet to his more than 258,000 followers on Sunday. Burniske believes that Ethereum could reach $10,000, but not until 2025. This prediction is based on his belief that Ethereum will continue to see increased adoption, especially in decentralized finance (DeFi) and non-fungible tokens (NFTs), as well as other use cases not yet fully developed.
In a series of tweets on March 17, Burniske shared his thoughts on the upcoming Ethereum network upgrade, dubbed initially “Shanghai” and more recently referred to as “Shapella.” Burniske anticipates that the upgrade will de-risk Ethereum staking and pave the way for increased staking percentages. Currently, 15% of ETH is staked, compared to 50-70% for its cryptocurrency peers. Burniske believes the Shapella upgrade will encourage more people to stake their ETH, with staking percentages potentially increasing 2-4x in the quarters following the upgrade.
Despite the positive outlook for Ethereum, some critics have suggested that the Shapella upgrade could lead to a significant dump of ETH in the market. Burniske refutes this claim and argues that critics have not thoroughly considered the implications of the upgrade on market dynamics. He believes that the Shapella upgrade will lead to bullish flows rather than bearish, and advises market participants to expect volatility but not be misled by short-term price fluctuations.
The Shapella upgrade will introduce a more defined lock-up period for staked ETH, which Burniske believes will encourage more people to stake their ETH. This previously undefined lock-up period has presented too much risk for many investors, leading to a lower percentage of staked ETH compared to other cryptocurrencies. Burniske believes that the Shapella upgrade will help de-risk staking and pave the way for higher staking percentages, resulting in increased demand for ETH.
Burniske expects the Ether-Bitcoin (ETHBTC) ratio to exhibit temporary weakness before breaking out to the upside following the Shapella upgrade in April. He also commented on the broader crypto market, noting that Bitcoin (BTC) rallying while traditional banks falter is pivotal for the industry. He suggested that when Bitcoin’s momentum slows, it could align with Ethereum’s push for increased staking post-Shapella. With increased adoption in DeFi, NFTs, and other use cases, Burniske anticipates bullish flows for Ethereum in the long term, leading to its eventual rise to $10,000 by 2025.
Forex traders and cryptocurrency investors are closely watching the developments surrounding Ethereum's upcoming network upgrade, Shapella, and its potential impact on the price of ETH. Chris Burniske's bullish prediction that Ethereum could reach $10,000 by 2025 is further supported by his belief that the upgrade will de-risk staking and encourage higher percentages, resulting in increased demand for ETH. However, some market participants remain cautious, as they fear the upgrade could lead to a significant dump of ETH in the market. Burniske dismisses this claim and instead expects the Shapella upgrade to lead to bullish flows for Ethereum in the long term. As a result, Forex traders and investors are advised to expect volatility but not be misled by short-term price fluctuations, as Ethereum's potential remains high in the long run.
